Oysters are on the menu from now until the end of March at the Cafe de Paris. Seafood is popular all along the Riviera, with restaurants setting out stalls over the winter months, and Monaco is no exception.
The old adage about eating oysters only when there's an R in the month is certainly true, but not for the reason that some people think. During the warm summer months, the shellfish native to the cold North Sea and Northern Atlantic are usually spawning. At this point, they're just not worth eating, and it's better to leave them alone so that stocks are replenished. Pacific oysters can be eaten all year round, but Native oysters are at their plumpest and tastiest during winter, providing a special treat for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
