Around a quarter of a million Irish men fought with the British army in the Great War, and over 35,000 died. The author discusses the reasons Irish men joined up, the conditions they faced and their reception on returning home. His talk is illustrated with extracts from his novel The Canal Bridge, which is set in Ireland and France the 1914-1918 conflict.
