Summer festival
From 18:00 to midnight, music, dancing and entertainment for kids. Including a parade of floats with a dragon theme, stalls selling confetti and costumes, and a ball at the place de la Mairie.
The festival is a modern reincarnation of a traditional pre-Lent carnival, such as that which takes place in Nice every February. Monaco Ville en Fete et son Sciaratu (Monaco Town Festival and its Carnival King). Historically, Monegasques took to the streets of the Rocher wearing costumes and making mischief. Groups of youths (i Mufi) wearing cotton bonnets and dresses would make a straw man (u payassu) and use bed sheets to throw it up in the air and catch it. Over time, the celebrations became less raucous, a parade of floats was included, and the payassu became a carnival king (Sciaratu), carried through the streets on a chariot.
Now the festivites take place during summer rather than the more traditional February time.
Program includes:
- country line dancing demonstrations and initiation by Monaco Country Line Dance
