Celebrations for Monaco's 2nd patron saint

Saint Roman was a Roman legionnaire under Emperor Valerian. While guarding Saint Lawrence of Rome he converted to christianity, for which Valerian had him killed.

Festivities for Saint Roman start on the last Saturday of July in the Saint Martin Gardens, where guests enjoy a bowl of pistou soup. On the first Friday of August the menu changes and a bowl of fish soup is offered. On the saint's day itself, there's a dawn serenade by members of the Saint Roman Society and a procession to the cathedral for a religious service at the altar of Saint Roman. The day ends in Saint Martin Gardens, where the President of the Saint Roman Society gives a speech, the Monaco national anthem is sung, and the Mayor provides an aperitif.
