Born 29 April 1899, Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington formed the best known jazz orchestra with some of the best musicians in the history of jazz. He excelled at writing music for the 3-minute record format and is considered to have raised the perception of jazz as an art form equal to more traditional musical genres.
