A little known, important chapter in French economic history arose from the emigration of around 50-60,000 Irish, following the defeat of King James II in 1689. The exiles became leading figures in French banking, tobacco trading, wine, textile and glass industries. They accumulated property and aristocratic titles in France and helped set the course of the French economy towards capitalism.
Professor Paul Monod specializes in 17th and 18th century British history. He is a visiting professor at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis during March 2014.
