FRENCH LANGUAGE meeting of French catholic charitable brotherhood
On 27th and 28th April, around 500 members of "penitent" brotherhoods from around the Mediterranean meet to establish cooperative links and to provide mutual aid. Events during the weekend:
28th April
- 10:30, pontifical mass, Monaco Cathedral
- 16:00, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Saint Nicolas Church Fontvieille
The Penitents' originate from groups of lay people who carrying out charitable work at the end of the Middle Ages. Monaco's first brotherhood was the Penitents Blancs, or Freres de la Passion, followed by the Penitents Noir, who were established on the Rock in a new chapel consecrated to the Virgin of Mercy (Vierge de la Misericorde). In 1813, the two brotherhoods united to formed the current Venerable Archiconfrerie de la Misericorde.
