Iconic art

Exhibition of icons starts today.

"Windows into heaven" is the title of an exhibition of religions icons starting today at the Maison de l'Amerique Latine. From now until 20th February, 100 icons are on display, 20 painted on wood, and 80 on glass.

Icons painted on glass are particularly common in Romania, where 200 years ago villagers couldn't afford to buy imported images on wooden panels. In the 19th century, local artisans started to paint icons onto glass, which was cheaper and more accessible. Such paintings are still being produced today, full of colourful symbols and drawing on biblical themes from the old and new testaments.

Under the auspices of Angela Foster, Honorary Consul of Romania in Monaco, and with the assistance of Father Daru of the Orthodox Church in Nice, you now have the chance to see some of the icons in the Principality.
