Fools and Fishes

Tomorrow is April Fool's Day, so keep your wits about you and watch your back for those poissons d'avril.

What's new?

Expect to taste mouth-watering pastries at the Fairmont Hotel following the arrival of Chef Patissier Christophe Appert. Before joining Maryon Gandon's team, Appert worked for several years with the Fauchon macaroon company.

We entertained special friends this week, which is a great pleasure and an opportunity to try places we've not yet visited. Always on the look out for a decent cooked breakfast, we sampled the Hermitage Hotel's buffet, with delicious mini-pork sausages, crispy bacon and creamy scrambled eggs. Lunch at Cafe Llorca was good value at 20 euros for 2 courses and a glass of wine. The menu changes daily and we had crab spring rolls for starters followed by daube nicoise (slow cooked beef stew from Nice). The restaurant was one of the venues for the recent Indian wedding, and the guests must have had fun, as the interior looked a little tired. Unlike the beautifully refurbished Crystal Bar in the Hermitage, where we ended the day in very classy surroundings.

What's in the diary...

Thursday: Arty start to weekend.
Friday: French humour.
Saturday: Ever looking at great motors.
Sunday: Events existing all around town.

Coming up next week, a gem of a tribute band.

Featured place

When was the last time you walked through the Japanese Garden? It's so calm and peaceful with its waterfall, pools and fishes (see this week's photo), and beautiful flowers in bloom. As the weather improves you'll find several shaded corners to sit back and relax. Along with other Monaco public gardens, it's a perfect place to de-stress.
