Today is World Red Cross Red Crescent Day, marking the birthday of its founder, Henri Dunant. Monaco Red Cross will be celebrating at the end of the month, 31st May, at Espace Leo Ferre, with a bazaar, photo exhibition and entertainment.

What's new?

Food was in the headlines this week, with news that chefs at Monte Carlo Beach have been awarded a prize for their organic pizza, which is now on the menu in the hotel's restaurants. If your taste is for something sweeter, the Hotel Metropole welcomes a new Chef Patissier. Loic Colliau has worked with several starred chefs and is now set to tempt the taste buds of Monaco. He's in charge of desserts at the Metropole's two gastronomic restaurants, as well as supervising cakes and pastries served up in the lobby, poolside cafe, and Metcafe in the shopping centre.

If you enjoy Baroque art, you'll be disappointed to learn that the Principality is losing the 17th century art that has been exhibited in the Musee de la Chapelle de la Visitation. The collection, which includes works by Rubens and Zurbaran was on loan to the museum since 1995, but is now to be auctioned to raise money for autistic children, according to the wishes of the owner, Barbara Piasecka Johnson, who died last year. Following a temporary closure while work is being undertaken, the museum will house an exhibition of sacred artworks.

Finally, don't miss the sports event of the weekend, the Historic Monaco Grand Prix, a real treat for fans of classic cars. Administrative and technical controls take place today, with trial sessions tomorrow and Saturday, and the big races on Sunday.

(1) This week's quote is the title of a book that records the experiences of Henry Dunant, born this day 1828. Dunant's book inspired the creation of the Red Cross and his ideas formed the basis of the Geneva Convention.
