Today is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and also the Fete de la Musique. All day you'll find free concerts on street corners around the Principality, ending on Quai Albert 1er with some French reggae performed by Naaman.
At the end of 2014 the United Nations designated today as International Day of Yoga. Combining physical, mental and spiritual exercise, yoga is practiced around the world, and in Monte Carlo there's an opportunity to try it this afternoon with Yoga Shala Monaco. In ancient civilizations the summer solstice held special, often mystical powers. It was a time when folk performed sun dances, lit bonfires, and wore garlands of herbs and flowers. Today, New Agers and Neopagans still gather together at stone circles, while Christians celebrate St John's Festival, which in Monaco takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
