Restaurant classifications

Several Monaco restaurants recently received their diamonds.

All restaurants in the Principality are awarded 1 to 5 diamonds, reflecting the services they provide. The rating doesn't relate to the price of the food, although clearly the more services offered, the higher the costs. Consequently prices charged by establishments with more diamonds need to cover the expense of the extra services. Nor does the rating necessarily reflect the food quality.

Requirements for 1 diamond restaurants are what you'd expect from any eating establishment. Two diamonds indicate that the restaurant uses fabric tablecloths and napkins, has separate toilets for men and women, and that waiting staff have some knowledge of English. The maitre d' at 3 diamond establishments can speak 2 foreign languages, one of which is English, the head chef has a recognized qualification, and waiting staff wear a uniform. At the next level, all staff have mastered English and one other foreign language, and the location, service, decor and table settings are of superior quality. The highest awards of 5 diamonds and 5 diamonds luxury are reserved for exceptionally prestigious restaurants with an internationally acknowledged reputation. All restaurants, apart from the 5 diamond ones, have to display their classification outside so you know what to expect.
