26th edition of the Monte Carlo Spring Arts Festival (Printemps des Arts).
From 15th March to 6th April Monaco celebrates the end of winter with its annual Spring Arts Festival. This year the committee is dedicating a large part of the program to three composers. It opens with several concerts showcasing the repertoire of German romantic, Brahms. Romance gives way to impressionist music, with performances of works by French composer Ravel, and finally, there's a musical portrait of the German exponent of musique concrete, Lachenmann.
Interspersed with the concerts dedicated to individual composers, there are performances of medieval polyphonic musique de l'esprit (music for the soul), and an evening dedicated to percussion from around the world. The Russian Ballet centenary is once again in on the act with music by Ravel, Mussorsky and Stravinsky, and dance itself is celebrated with 4 new choreographed compositions. There are also surprises and innovative ideas aimed at attracting a new audience whose members may never have attended a performance before. Concerts are being staged in the railway station for workers traveling in and out of Monaco every day, and for fans of rock music there's a nuit surprenante (surprising night) which includes a German heavy metal band interpreting classics, as well as the bizarre yet entertaining vegetable orchestra.
As usual, the festival includes fringe performances, taking its music into the surrounding area. There are performances in Beaulieu, Cap d'Ail and Beausoleil. Not forgetting the musical mystery tour, which takes the Monaco audience to a secret location out of town.
