Special events for the Museum's 100th birthday.
The Oceanographic Museum was founded by Prince Albert 1 who was passionate about the sea. His interest in oceanography continued throughout his life, and he took part in 28 research campaigns between 1885 and 1915. As he traveled the world, he needed a place to present the results of his journeys and so he built the Oceanographic Museum.
Construction began in 1899 and took 11 years to complete, opening to the public on 29th March 1910. For the centenary of the Oceanographic Museum, several events have been planned:
An exhibition of photographs on the terraces of the prison showing images of the Museum's construction and inauguration a hundred years ago.
The launch of Monaco Blue Initiative, with participants from politics, science, industry and media. Organized by the Oceanographic Institute, Fondation Prince Albert 1er and Fondation Prince Albert II, Monaco Blue Initiative aims to come up with ideas, suggestions and proposals for solving the problems faced by the world's oceans.
Starting 2nd April, an exhibition of 60 works by British artist Damien Hirst.
- Long live the Mediterranean and its biodiversity
In the context of the United Nations International Year of Biodiversity, an exhibition about Mediterranean biodiversity using thought-provoking images.
In addition, the Monaco Stamp Issuing Office is publishing a set of postage stamps, on sale at the Stamp & Coin Museum, Monaco post offices and specialist philatelic outlets.
