Monte Carlo Rolex Masters

Prestigious tennis competition starts 10th April.

Soon, Monaco will be hypnotized by the tick-tock of tennis balls at the Country Club. The Monte Carlo Rolex Masters tournament is part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series and brings together the best male competitors in the world. The players were announced last week, and although there's some uncertainty about the appearance of Swiss Roger Federer this year, all the other top stars will be competing for the 2,2 million euros prize money.

The Monte Carlo tennis championship was first held in 1897, becoming an open event in 1969. Last year was a record for spectator figures, with 126,000 attending, 10,000 of them on the centre court. Several projects to improve the competition for spectators were finalized in 2009, such as enlarging the southern stand to increase capacity, and the introduction of an e-ticketing scheme that allows fans to choose their seat online and print off tickets at home. This year a new zone has been created for exhibitors, making the grounds less cluttered so that spectators can move around more easily. In addition, the media have access to a refurbished press area with wifi, and a bigger room to interview the tennis stars.
