Monte Carlo Opera has announced concerts and productions for the coming 2012-2013 season.
For the first time, two evenings are dedicated to young people. For 10 to 20 euros, those aged under 26 can attend Verdi's La Traviata on 1st Feb 2013, and Pietro Mascagni's Amica on 29th March 2013. A subscription is also available for 50 to 100 euros which includes access to a further 2 productions, La Fanciulla del West and L'Hhomme de la Mancha.
A disappointment for some may be the decision to drop live broadcasts from the New York Met, which Director Jean-Louis Grinda described "deficitaire" (in deficit). However, to make up for the disappointment, there are some wonderful voices performing in the Principality. Visiting singers include contralto Nathalie Stutzmann in Handel's Duello Amoroso, and a welcome return in March 2013 by Italian mezzo soprano Cecilia Bartoli, and fabulous Welsh bass baritone Bryn Terfel.
A gala production of Puccini's La Fanciulla del West is planned for National Day, and the season closes with Verdi's Stiffelio, featuring Argentinian tenor Jose Cura in the title role.
