The Meridien Beach Plaza receives a Clef Verte (green key) award.
One of the objectives of Monaco's Tourist Authority (DTC) is for the Principality to become a benchmark for responsible and sustainable tourism. Now, the Meridien Beach Plaza is the first hotel in Monaco to receive the international Clef Verte label, which is given to establishments that meet standards for several environmental criteria. Representatives of different hotel services formed a "green team" to work on projects:
- defining indicators for water and energy consumption, and carbon emissions
- launching monthly challenges to reduce paper consumption, collect used batteries and ink cartridges, and sort waste for recycling
- using recycled paper
- using eco cleaning products
- installing filtered water fountains
- using sea water to cool the air conditioning system
- implementing a Green Choice program for clients
- implementing a Housekeeping Turndown project to automatically turn off lights and computers after 10 minutes inactivity
- renovating gardens with regional plants, economical automatic watering, natural fertilizers and no pesticides
The DTC has its own green team that visits hotels in Monaco. In June it visited the Fairmont Hotel, which uses sea water to heat and cool its bedrooms, and where the Horizon restaurant menu features organic, seasonal food.
A tour was organized at the Meridien too, where the DTC discovered that employees were introducing eco-friendly initiatives to involve clients. The initiatives have paid dividends now that the hotel can proudly display its Clef Verte label.
