La Montgolfiere - where the world's a nicer place

New restaurant on the Rock.

Those of you who received our newsletter yesterday will have read about our recent visit to the new restaurant La Montgolfiere. Owner and chef Henri Geraci previously worked at Castelroc and the now demolished Tulip Inn Terminus' La Sarriette. For the past 2 years he's been the personal chef of a Monaco resident, but recently decided to return to the restaurant trade, taking over the Relais des Amis, which he now runs with his wife under its new name. You can read a brief description about our visit in the newsletter, and here we expand a little on what's on offer.

Maki de foie gras Nippon'style

La Montgolfiere is a small restaurant with just 20 covers inside, and a few more on the quiet, pedestrian street just steps away from the Prince's Palace. We visited in the evening, but the restaurant is also open at lunchtimes, when Geraci prepares plats du jour according to what's available in the market. His carte offers regional and Monegasque specialities such as petit farcis (stuffed vegetables) and stockfish, using fresh, seasonal produce. You'll also find some fusion style dishes, reflecting the chef's and his wife's love of Asian cuisine. At dinner, there's a 3 course menu for 39 euros that changes every 3 weeks.

You can visit for lunch or dinner, from Monday to Saturday, except Wednesday evenings, when it's closed. Currently Sunday is also a day off, although Chef Geraci told us that may change soon. So next time you're looking for somewhere different to eat in Monaco, take a trip "up, up and away" in La Montgolfiere on the Rock.
