Art and oceanography

The Oceanographic Museum is to host more art exhibitions.

Robert Calcagno, Director of the Oceanographic Institute has revealed the policy of Monaco's Oceanographic Museum. Following the success of the Damien Hirst exhibition (running until September), the cliff top building is to host more contemporary art events. Calcagno hopes to breath new life into the museum by linking the science of oceanography with art, and making it accessible to all sections of society.

Plans are already afoot for the future program. Next up is a scientific exhibition on the theme of the Mediterranean. Chinese artist Huang Yong Ping will exhibit works, including a 25 m long octopus. In 2011 American artist Mark Dion is coming over to put music into the museum collections and there are future plans for an exhibition of either aborigine or inuit art.

In November, the museum also plays host to the World Energy Congress, then a conference on the Gulf of Mexico, and towards the end of 2011, a scientific colloquium about the deep oceans.

Finally, renovation work is also continuing, with improvements to the aquarium entrance hall that will include sound, vibrations and smells.
