Monaco's film buffs may get new theatre.
Plans to renovate Fontvieille shopping centre include the possibility of a new cinema. Work to improve the commercial district could start in 2015 and last for 3 to 4 years, with an option to locate a movie theatre on the site of the Salle du Canton.
Shop owners in Fontvieille are positive about the plans. Relocating the cinema could bring them more customers and an opportunity for longer opening hours. However the manager of the Sporting Cinema in Monte Carlo is doubtful that the new location will prove popular, saying that movie-goers will find nothing open on Sundays and holidays, and that the space is too small.
In addition to the cinema, there are plans to double the number of shops. The Naval Museum, Car Collection and Salle du Canton could find themselves moved to a new home in a spot at Port Hercule.
As yet, nothing has been finalised. But with a large underground car park and a McDonald's next door, the location seems perfect.
